So, you might be wondering...what IS a borehole?

In the photo below, Caitlin is standing next to the borehole completed in the spring of 2017.  When water is needed, you pump the handle, connect to groundwater and...voila!  You can fill containers with water and carry them home for drinking, bathing, cooking, etc.  That, my friend, is a borehole - the means to supplying clean water to Ugandan communities.

We reached our goal of raising $7000 to build this borehole in 2017!!!

A horrible drought had been hitting the Soroti region, and boreholes were starting to dry up.  We dug this borehole extra deep to hit deeper groundwater and make it possible to access water.

The borehole is located right behind Mercy Seat School, so it supplies clean water to the students as well as the community at large.

It's vital to keep our kids hydrated so that they are healthy and able to concentrate in class.

It's vital to provide community access to clean water.

It's vital to tackle fundamental needs in order to work towards empowerment and sustainability.

It's our desire that the community takes ownership over its new clean water source.  Instead of just giving a handout, we involved the local community.  Pastor Robert mobilized parents of our students to provide local materials such as sand, stones, and cement.  This way, we hope the people using the borehole won't view it as solely a gift from the outside but as something they have helped create.  We have also nominated a local leader, John Bosco, to oversee the upkeep of the borehole.  If future repairs are needed, he will reach out to the local community and mobilize help.  We hope this will both encourage people to be responsible for the borehole and empower them to be a part of the change within their community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!  Eyalama noi!
